"The one day trip to Mount Etna was truly an unforgettable experience. The hike was great, and our guide Roberto gave us a huge amount of information about Catania, Mount Etna and volcanoes in general. So you really learned a lot on the tour. In addition, Roberto always made sure that everyone kept up, gave tips and looked out for everyone. It was great! I can recommend the tour."

Choosing an Etna Hike
Which Etna Hike Is Yours?
How high a hike goes, what you can do on your own, the real price, how hard each tour says it is, and what happens when the volcano or the weather changes the plan.
A Mount Etna hike is the way up that costs what it says. The hikes on this page stay below 2,500 m, where walking is free, so there is no cable car or 4x4 ticket to pay on the day. The guide earns the price with the route: off the main paths, onto the rim of the Valle del Bove, into a lava cave. Guided hikes below 2,500 m draw 13% of the reviews in GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026. Our pick is Etnaround’s 7-hour trek from Catania, from $84 and rated 4.9 from 1,829 reviews. It climbs about 550 m to roughly 2,400 m, with trekking shoes, poles and jackets included.
See dates for the Etnaround trek →
How high a hike goes, and what you can do on your own
Mount Etna rises over 3,300 m, and the rules depend on altitude. Walking is free up to 2,500 m. Above that, an authorised alpine or volcanological guide is mandatory under the mayoral ordinances, and the summit zone can close completely. How high anyone goes is decided on the day by the comuni’s ordinances on INGV’s advice. Tours list an alternative route when the summit is shut. Every hike here ends below the line: Etnaround and Etna Guide Tours top out at about 2,400 m, and the walks from Catania and Taormina at about 2,000 m.
So you can walk this band without a guide: on the south side the Silvestri Craters, next to Rifugio Sapienza, need no guide (the landowner has charged a €5 entry since October 2025). A guide adds routes off the main paths, along the Valle del Bove rim and into lava caves with a helmet and lamp, plus boots, jackets, transport and insurance. Our guide to hiking Etna without a guide covers the do-it-yourself version.
The 2002 trek is on the north side, at Piano Provenzana, about 1,800 m up. INGV researchers record that the October 2002 eruption’s lava destroyed the tourist facilities there. To go above 2,500 m, see the summit tours or the cable car tours.
The real price
For our pick the listed price is the total. Etnaround’s $84 per person covers the guide, the transport from Catania and Trecastagni, and the gear. The only extra is lunch: food and drinks are not included, and the group stops in Trecastagni so you can buy a sandwich.
Two tours work differently. Kemedia’s walks from Catania and from Taormina leave the cable car and 4x4 bus out of the price, as an option bought on the spot. The listings give no figure. Published 2026 prices were EUR 54 for a cable car return and EUR 82 for the cable car, 4x4 bus and guide toward 3,000 m. The 2002 craters trek is the cheapest at $40, with no transport, and it lists its extras in euros: parking “€5 for the entire day on weekdays and €8 on Sundays and public holidays”, trekking shoes “5 to 7 € per pair”, a windbreaker “5 euro”, and in winter snowshoes “12 € per person”.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; cash fees as the listings state them. Operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
How hard each one is, in the listing’s words. The two 7-hour treks from Catania are the demanding end. Etnaround climbs about 550 m and is not for children under 10 or people with a low level of fitness; a guest from Switzerland wrote that “the ascent was also somewhat strenuous at times.” Etna Guide Tours calls its route “a little bit challenging at the beginning” and sets a 120 kg limit. The 2002 trek is “reserved for hikers with medium training” and walks crater edges, so it is not for people with vertigo. The rest are easy: Kemedia’s Taormina tour follows an “easy-level nature trail”, Etna People walks up to 2 hours at about 2,000 m, and ETNA VIBES walks from about 1,920 to 2,000 m.

Rifugio Sapienza is roughly 12 to 13 C colder than Catania, and guides ask for boots, layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and 1.5 litres of water, even in summer. Etnaround and Etna Guide Tours include shoes, poles and jackets, and Etna People’s price includes boot and jacket rental. Kemedia lends shoes only if you ask by the day before.
Fit walkers who want the most mountain should pick a 7-hour trek; for an hour or two of walking and a tasting, Kemedia or ETNA VIBES. Six of the seven hikes here list people with mobility impairments as not suitable; a jeep tour covers the same slopes with short walks. Choosing a base? See Etna from Taormina or Catania.
When the volcano or the weather changes the plan
Below 2,500 m the hikes are less exposed to summit closures, but they still change. Etnaround skips the lava cave after high tremors or an eruption, even if it has finished, and snow can change its winter route. Etna Guide Tours says weather and access restrictions can change the programme, and refunds guests if it cancels for bad weather. The 2002 trek can be cut short if conditions change. Check INGV’s Osservatorio Etneo and the Parco dell’Etna ordinances, or ask the guide. Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before.

"The tour was perfect, the guides were super nice and fun, and they provided a lot of information. You get everything you need and might not have with you, such as trekking poles, a rain jacket, a sweater, a backpack and hiking boots. It's a wonderful excursion up Mount Etna."
"It was a wonderful experience in spectacular scenery. Even during the drive to the starting point of the hike, Antonio told us a lot of interesting facts about Etna and its history. The hike was doable, although the ascent was also somewhat strenuous at times. Antonio took into account the fitness level of each participant and took additional breaks when necessary. He pointed out the many distinctive features of Etna's unique flora and fauna and explained everything to us about its geology and how the people around Etna live with the volcano."
"A scenic hiking tour, beautiful views and enthusiastic guides. Great background information about Etna and about nature. Thank you, Antonio, for the enjoyable time and the dose of humor!"

Very good organization and communication with the company. The route is somewhat demanding, but it's worth a try. I recommend it!!"

Etna Hiking FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a guided hike on Etna, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; access rules from the comuni's ordinances.
Yes, up to 2,500 m; above that an authorised alpine or volcanological guide is mandatory. The mayoral ordinances leave the band below 2,500 m free to walk, and on the south side the Silvestri Craters by Rifugio Sapienza need no guide (a €5 entry since October 2025). A guide adds routes off the main paths, lava caves with helmets and lamps, gear and transport. Our guide to hiking Etna without a guide covers the do-it-yourself version.
It ranges from an easy walk of about 2 hours to a 7-hour trek with about 550 m of climbing. Etnaround's trek is not for children under 10 or people with a low level of fitness, and the 2002 craters trek is reserved for hikers with medium training. Kemedia's Taormina tour follows an easy-level nature trail. The hike comparison grades each one in its listing's own words.
About 2,400 m on the two longest treks, about 2,000 m on the shorter walks. All of them stay below the 2,500 m line where a guide becomes mandatory, so no cable car or 4x4 ticket is needed. How high anyone can go higher up is decided on the day by the comuni's ordinances on INGV's advice. For the craters above 2,500 m, see the summit tours.
You need closed, sturdy shoes, and most tours lend them. Etnaround and Etna Guide Tours include trekking shoes, and Etna People's price includes boot rental. Kemedia provides shoes only if you ask by the day before. The 2002 craters trek rents them on site at 5 to 7 € a pair and says that without adequate shoes you are not covered by its insurance. Etna Guide Tours also includes a helmet.
Most of these hikes include one, but not on every day. Etnaround's trek, Etna Guide Tours' route through Grotta Pitagora, Etna People's trek and both Kemedia tours list a lava cave, with a helmet and lamp on the Kemedia tours. Etnaround skips the cave after high tremors or an eruption, even if the eruption has finished. Check dates for the Etnaround trek.
On most hikes nothing but lunch; the 2002 craters trek and Kemedia's tours are the exceptions. The north-side trek lists parking at €5 on weekdays and €8 on Sundays and holidays, plus shoe and jacket rental. Kemedia offers the cable car and 4x4 bus as an option bought on the spot, with no figure in the listing. For the cable car's own prices, see the cable car tours.
Yes: Etna People and Kemedia both pick up in Taormina. Etna People's 6.5-hour morning trek includes a light lunch and an almond wine tasting, and Kemedia's 7-hour tour adds a lava cave and a tasting of honey and olive oil, with pickup also in Giardini Naxos. Both walk at about 2,000 m. See Etna from Taormina or Catania.
The route changes or the tour is cancelled, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before. Etna Guide Tours says weather and access restrictions from the authorities can change its programme, and it refunds guests if it cancels for bad weather. In winter, snow can change Etnaround's route. Check INGV's Osservatorio Etneo and the Parco dell'Etna ordinances, or ask the guide. Etnaround's trek lists its own rules.
