"It was an incredible experience; even better than expected and delivers way more than it costs. My guide, Gaetano, was very knowledgeable and fun to be around. Although I was a solo traveller, I felt comfortable the whole time. I recommend this tour to everyone! It was beautiful and it’s clear the guides are passionate about what they do."

How the Etna Jeep Tour Works
Four steps, from the meeting point in Catania to Piano Vetore at about 2,000 m and the drive back.
Meet in Catania, 15 Minutes Early
Choose one of three meeting points in Catania when you book. The operator asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before the start and allows a delay of 5 minutes at most; after that the booking is cancelled and not refunded. The group is limited to 8.
Tastings in Zafferana Etnea
About an hour by jeep or van brings you to Zafferana Etnea for 30 minutes of tastings of local products. Trekking shoes are lent if you send the date and your shoe size 24 to 72 hours ahead; otherwise wear sneakers or closed shoes, since sandals and flip-flops are not allowed.
Valle del Bove and a Lava Cave
A 30-minute stop at the Valle del Bove, then about an hour on the volcano with your guide, visiting an area of ancient explosive activity such as the Hornitos or a lava flow cave, with a helmet and flashlight provided.
Piano Vetore at About 2,000 m
The tour ends with a 30-minute walk and photo stop at Piano Vetore, at about 2,000 m, timed for sunset, which clouds can hide. Then an hour back to the meeting point. The organiser may change or cancel the route in bad weather; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Choosing an Etna Jeep Tour
Which Etna Jeep Tour Is Yours?
How high a jeep tour goes, what you pay, how the seven tours differ by vehicle, cave and time of day, and what happens when the weather turns.
A Mount Etna jeep tour is the easy way onto the volcano’s slopes. A vehicle does the climbing, a guide takes you into a lava cave, and the walks are short. The tours on this page stay at about 1,800 to 2,000 m, well below the 2,500 m line, with no cable car or summit 4x4 ticket to buy, so the listed price is what you pay. 4x4 jeep tours draw 9% of the Etna reviews in GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026. Our pick is Etna & Sea Excursions’ tour from Catania, from $67 and rated 4.7 from 2,709 reviews, the most reviewed jeep tour here. It runs 5 to 5.5 hours, with a lava cave or the Hornitos, the Valle del Bove and tastings in Zafferana Etnea.
What a jeep tour is, and how high it goes
These are not the 4x4 buses that carry hikers from the top of the cable car toward the summit craters. Those are part of the cable car tours and the summit tours. A jeep tour drives the lower slopes, the lava fields, the woods and the edge of the Valle del Bove. It stops for short guided walks and a lava cave. Our pick reaches about 2,000 m, at Piano Vetore. Red Etna’s two tours walk to around 1,800 m and say they are not affected by volcanic restrictions, because they run at medium altitude. Red Etna’s morning listing excludes a summit visit.
Walking is free up to 2,500 m; above it an authorised guide is mandatory, and how high anyone goes is decided on the day by the comuni’s ordinances on INGV’s advice. A jeep tour stays in the band below that line, so its plan changes less.
Read the vehicle line. Our pick’s rules say tours run “exclusively by jeep or van”, so on some days the ride is a van. If the off-road ride is the point, EtnaMoving drives Land Rover Defenders and Toyota Land Cruisers on “an off-road route” over old lava flows from Trecastagni. Red Etna uses 6- and 8-seat 4x4s, and Etna tour excursion adds a 2 km off-road drive on the north side.
The real price
For our pick the listed price is the total: $67 per person covers the jeep or van, the guide, the helmet and flashlight, and the tastings. No fee is listed as paid on site. The same is true of Red Etna’s two tours at $67. Bring your own water, though; Red Etna lists food and water as excluded.
The exception is small. EtnaMoving’s $112 morning tour lists an optional entrance ticket to the Silvestri Craters at “€ 5 per person to be paid on site”, and marks it “NOT RECOMMENDED”. The Etna cableway is excluded too. Etnalivetour’s 8-hour day starts from $129; lunch and the Alcantara Gorges entrance come with its full-day option, so check which option the from-price buys. Pickup away from its Giarre meeting point is an extra option.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; cash fees as the listings state them. Operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The caves. Every tour here lists a lava cave with helmets and lights. Red Etna’s sunset tour goes to Grotta Cassone, and its morning tour to Grotta delle Nevi, past Monti Sartorius. Etna tour excursion also visits Grotta delle Nevi. Our pick visits “the Hornitos or a Lava Flow Cave”, so the cave is not certain on every departure.
Morning or evening. Etna & Sea Excursions and Red Etna each sell a morning and a sunset version at the same price, with a lava cave in both. The sunset versions end at Piano Vetore. If you are choosing by time of day, our sunset tours page covers the evening options as such.

See this tour →What to bring, and who it suits
Jeep tours suit people who want the volcano without a long hike. Families with small children can come: our pick has an infant rate with a car seat, and Etnalivetour says its tour suits infants in a carrier. Etna tour excursion says it is suitable for everyone and excludes only children under 2 and people over 95. The walks are short but real: Red Etna, EtnaMoving and Etnalivetour list people with mobility impairments as not suitable, while the two Etna & Sea Excursions listings name no restrictions. Red Etna also rules out pregnant women and people with heart or respiratory problems.
Wear closed shoes, and bring a warm layer even in summer: Rifugio Sapienza is roughly 12 to 13 C colder than Catania. Etna tour excursion lends shoes, a jacket, a hat and gloves, and EtnaMoving a jacket and boots on request. If you would rather walk more, the hiking tours cover the same band on foot. Staying in Taormina? Etnalivetour picks up there; see Etna from Taormina or Catania.
When the weather or the volcano changes the plan
Our pick’s organiser may change or cancel the itinerary in bad weather for safety reasons. Red Etna’s and EtnaMoving’s tours run rain or shine, and Red Etna gives each guest a waterproof poncho and follows INGV reports and tremor data. Etna tour excursion asks you to message the guide about the weather before booking. None of these tours promises lava, and every one cancels free up to 24 hours before.

"We had a great tour with our guide Kevin. He is able to explain things very well and clearly, and he keeps the atmosphere light-hearted by making jokes and chatting with everyone. We felt very comfortable. Plenty of breaks in between and enough challenge with the climbing and visiting the cave. We highly recommend this tour!"
"An exceptional experience, even when Etna decides to play hide-and-seek! 🌋😂 Despite challenging weather, fog, and sometimes limited visibility, we had a great time. And this was largely thanks to our guide Fabricio, who was absolutely fantastic. Passionate, friendly and engaging, he took the time to explain everything to us and to tell us the history of Mount Etna and its surroundings. You can immediately sense that he loves his job and sharing his knowledge, and that completely transforms the experience. In the end, the weather almost became part of the adventure! We learned a lot and had a great time. Excellent organization, an exceptional guide, and an experience that we wholeheartedly recommend. Thank you for this wonderful memory of Etna! ❤️🌋"
"Our guide Giorgio was exceptional... He gave us a wealth of information with great expertise. A truly professional person who is passionate about the place and his work. Well done, Giorgio!"
"When you're in Sicily, you have to see Mount Etna. Impressive tour with a super nice Fabio!"

Etna Jeep Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a jeep or 4x4 tour on Etna, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; access rules from the comuni's ordinances.
No, the jeep tours here stay at about 1,800 to 2,000 m on the slopes. Above 2,500 m an authorised guide is mandatory, and how high anyone goes is decided on the day by the comuni's ordinances on INGV's advice. Red Etna's morning listing excludes a summit visit. For the craters above 2,500 m, see the summit tours or the cable car tours.
Not on every tour: our pick runs by jeep or van. Etna & Sea Excursions says its tours are carried out exclusively by jeep or van. EtnaMoving names Land Rover Defenders and Toyota Land Cruisers on an off-road route, and Red Etna uses 6- and 8-seat 4x4 vehicles. EtnaMoving's morning tour is the one built around the off-road drive.
Short walks: the listings that give a time put them at 30 to 50 minutes. Our pick's walk at Piano Vetore is listed at 30 minutes. Red Etna calls its trekking part easy, to around 1,800 m, and Etna tour excursion describes a light trek of about 50 minutes, suitable for everyone. EtnaMoving adds a walk in the volcanic desert at about 2,000 m. For longer walks, see the hiking tours.
On most jeep tours, nothing listed. EtnaMoving lists an optional Silvestri Craters ticket at € 5 per person to be paid on site, which it marks as not recommended, and excludes the Etna cableway. Red Etna excludes food and water, so bring your own. Check dates for our pick, where the $67 covers the tastings.
No tour can promise that. The jeep tours visit old lava flows, a lava cave and craters from past eruptions. Red Etna says it monitors tremor data and INGV reports, and that its medium-altitude tours are not affected by volcanic restrictions. Our pick visits the Hornitos or a lava flow cave, so the cave is not certain on every departure. Red Etna's sunset tour visits Grotta Cassone.
Both run at the same price; choose by your day. Etna & Sea Excursions and Red Etna each sell a morning and a sunset version with a lava cave. The sunset versions end at Piano Vetore, timed for sunset, which clouds can hide. If you are choosing by time of day, see the sunset tours.
Yes on most of them, including infants. Our pick has an infant rate with a car seat for ages 0 to 2, Red Etna includes a child seat with an infant ticket, and Etnalivetour says its tour suits infants in a baby carrier. Etna tour excursion excludes only children under 2 and people over 95. Etna tour excursion lends shoes, jackets, hats and gloves.
Yes: Etnalivetour picks up in Catania or Taormina, or you meet it in Giarre. Its 8-hour full-day option adds lunch and the Alcantara Gorges entrance; pickup away from the Etna Fuel station meeting point in Giarre is an extra option. Most other jeep tours start in Catania, Trecastagni or Zafferana Etnea. See Etna from Taormina or Catania.
