How the Etna Summit Trek Works
Four steps, from the bar beside Rifugio Sapienza to the cable car back down.
Meet at Rifugio Sapienza
Meet your guide at Bar Monte Gebel, on the right side of Rifugio Sapienza on Etna's south side, or take the optional pickup if you selected it. The cable car ticket (and the 4x4 on the 3,400 m option) is paid on site; trekking shoes can be rented there for €6.
Cable Car Up, Then the 4x4
The cable car takes about 15 minutes. On the 3,000 m option you start walking from the top of the cable car; on the 3,400 m option off-road 4x4 vehicles take you on to 2,850 m, where the trek toward the central craters begins.
The Trek
About three hours on foot across lava flows and volcanic sand with a volcano guide, a helmet on. The 3,000 m route ends at the Barbagallo craters; the summit route reaches about 3,400 m, conditions permitting, and walks the rim between La Voragine and Bocca Nuova.
Down by the Valle del Bove
The descent follows volcanic ash slopes to a viewpoint over the Valle del Bove, then back to the cable car. If weather or volcanic activity rule the summit out, the guide follows an alternative route at the highest altitude that can be reached safely and within local rules.

Choosing a Summit Trek
Which Etna Summit Tour Is Yours?
How high you can go, the real price, the seven treks side by side, who they suit, and what happens when the summit is shut.
An Etna summit tour is a guided walk on foot toward the summit craters, at about 3,000 to 3,400 m, on a volcano that is over 3,300 m high. It is for fit walkers. Our pick is Sicilying’s guided summit hiking tour from Rifugio Sapienza, from $62 and rated 4.7 from 6,153 reviews, the most reviewed trek here, with a choice of a 3,000 m or a 3,400 m route. Plan for the cash part too: the listing leaves the cable car (€54) or the cable car and 4x4 (€82) to be paid on site.

How high a summit tour goes, and who decides
Walking on Etna is free up to 2,500 m. Above that, an authorised alpine or volcanological guide is mandatory under the mayoral ordinances of the towns around the volcano, and in the inner summit zone, during the attention phase, the rules add a helmet and a cap of 300 hikers a day. That is why every tour on this page includes a guide and a helmet, and why none of them can promise the craters. How high you go is decided on the day by the comuni’s ordinances on INGV’s advice; tours list an alternative route when the summit is shut. In August 2026, during eruptive activity, Bronte’s ordinance suspended excursions in the summit zone. Check INGV’s Osservatorio Etneo, the national civil protection department and the Parco dell’Etna’s ordinance page, or ask your guide.
The full summit hike is real work. The guide associations grade it difficult: about 6 hours and 8 km, with 600 m of ascent from about 2,800 to 3,400 m. Most treks shorten the climb with the cable car from Rifugio Sapienza and a 4x4, or start from Piano Provenzana on the north side in a Unimog 4x4. If you want the altitude without the long walk, see the Etna cable car tour instead; if you would rather walk below 2,500 m, see Etna hiking tours.
The real total price
On most summit treks the listed price buys the guide, the gear and the insurance. The ride up is paid in cash on the day, and the amount is in the listing if you look for it. For Sicilying it is $62 plus €54 on the 3,000 m option, or $62 plus €82 on the 3,400 m summit option (children up to 10 years old: €31 or €51). Aitne Med and Ashàra list €65 for the cable car and 4x4, dropping to €54 for the cable car alone if the summit is closed. The two north-side treks list €60 for the Unimog. Etna Blaze’s two treks include pickup from Catania and list €54 or €82 on top.
This is not a hidden cost so much as a moved one. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, Etna tours that leave the 4x4 to be paid on site list about 17% cheaper; a summit trek on foot costs about a quarter more than a van tour with short walks. Budget the cash before you compare prices.

How the treks differ
South side, by cable car. Sicilying, Aitne Med and Ashàra all start at Rifugio Sapienza, take the cable car to about 2,500 m and a 4x4 on to about 2,800-2,850 m. Sicilying is the one with two heights to choose from and an optional pickup. Aitne Med and the etnahikers trek both limit groups to 10, and Aitne Med includes hiking boots, walking sticks and a wind jacket. Ashàra sets the highest minimum age, 11, and says the hike suits moderately trained hikers used to sandy, uneven ground.
North side, by Unimog. etnahikers and Trip on Top Etna meet at the souvenir shop at Piano Provenzana and drive to 2,900 m before walking. Both descend through sand gullies toward the Pizzi Deneri area above the Valle del Bove, and both cap groups at 10.
From Catania. Etna Blaze’s two treks collect you around 7:30 in the morning. One walks to 3,000 m and gives each guest a drone video; the other goes for the central craters at about 3,350 m. Both promise a full refund if the tour is altered or cancelled for weather or the volcano.

It is cold up there in any month. Air cools by about 0.6-0.7 °C for every 100 m, so 3,000 m is roughly 19-20 °C colder than Catania. Guides ask for boots, layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and 1.5 litres of water, even in summer. Most treks lend boots and a jacket; Sicilying rents trekking shoes for €6. Ashàra asks you to bring a spare T-shirt, a 10-20 litre backpack, water, snacks and a packed lunch.
Every listing rules out people with heart problems, all but one rule out pregnant women, and Sicilying says the tour is prohibited for asthmatics. Minimum ages differ: 6 for Sicilying and the Etna Blaze 3,000 m trek, 7 for the Etna Blaze summit trek, 11 for Ashàra. The north-side treks and the Etna Blaze summit trek say they are not for people with a low level of fitness. If that is you, the Etna jeep tour or a sunset tour gets you onto the volcano without the climb.
When the weather or the volcano shuts the summit
Sicilying’s guide may follow an alternative route at the highest altitude that can be reached safely, and the operator may change the transport used to reach it. Aitne Med and Ashàra switch to the cable car only and charge €54 instead of €65. A guest from Switzerland on the etnahikers trek wrote: “Unfortunately, we were unable to reach the summit due to the wind and gases”. Treat the craters as the aim of the day, not a guarantee, and book with free cancellation (all seven allow it up to 24 hours before).

What Guests Say
"From the begging to the end was really good, very well organized. They take care of safety. Massimo was amazing guide. All recommendations for the tour."
"Wonderful tour! Even with bad weather conditions our guide Giuseppe took good care of us and made sure we had a wonderful time! Also our driver Roberto who picked us up in Catania was very kind. We were glad that we didn‘t have to drive in this chaotic traffic. Would definitely check the weather before we go next time there was wind up to 100km/h which made the climb very hard as there was almost a sandstorm and our eyes couldn‘t see much… but other than that 10/10"
"A truly wonderful and special experience. The hike to the summit is highly recommended. If you don't have outdoor clothing, you can rent it on site. Good guide who set a really nice pace, even though it seemed slow at first."
"My guide Aldo was really helpful and super friendly! Gave me some great recommendations for where to grab a drink after the trip!"
"Really amazing once in a lifetime experience. Would recommend"
"Very good trip. Everything is good. Volcano is impressive."
"Incredible views. At the top, the landscapes look like they're from another planet. The guide was very entertaining. The walking pace was adjusted so that everyone could make the ascent, and there were also an adequate number of breaks."

Etna Summit Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a summit trek, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; access rules from the comuni's ordinances and the Etna guide associations.
Yes, with an authorised guide, on the days the ordinances allow it. Walking is free up to 2,500 m; above that an authorised alpine or volcanological guide is mandatory, and how high you go is decided on the day by the comuni's ordinances on INGV's advice. In August 2026 Bronte's ordinance suspended excursions in the summit zone during eruptive activity. See can you hike Etna without a guide.
The listed price plus a cash fee for the cable car and 4x4, usually €54 to €82. Sicilying lists from $62 with €54 (3,000 m) or €82 (3,400 m) paid on site; Aitne Med and Ashàra list from $66 with €65; the north-side treks list from $67 with €60 for the Unimog. The full table is on our summit tour page.
Hard enough that the guide associations grade the full climb difficult. The real summit hike is about 6 hours and 8 km with 600 m of ascent from about 2,800 to 3,400 m, on sand and uneven lava. Ashàra describes its trek as suitable for moderately trained hikers used to sandy or uneven terrain. If that sounds like too much, the cable car tour stops lower.
The 3,000 m trek stops at the Barbagallo craters; the summit trek goes on toward the central craters at about 3,400 m. On Sicilying's tour, the 3,000 m option uses the cable car only (€54 on site) and the summit option adds a 4x4 to 2,850 m (€82 on site). Both start at Rifugio Sapienza. Check dates for both options.
The tour usually runs lower, on an alternative route. Sicilying's guide may follow an alternative route at the highest altitude that can be reached safely; Aitne Med and Ashàra switch to the cable car only and charge €54 instead of €65. Etna Blaze's two treks give a full refund if the tour is altered or cancelled for weather or volcanic conditions. Compare them on the Etna Blaze summit trek page.
Yes: two treks start from Piano Provenzana and drive to 2,900 m by Unimog 4x4. etnahikers and Trip on Top Etna both meet at the Sole Neve souvenir shop, list €60 in cash for the Unimog, and cap groups at 10. There is no cable car on the north side. See the etnahikers summit trek.
Boots, warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and a hat, even in summer. At 3,000 m it is roughly 19-20 °C colder than Catania, and guides ask for 1.5 litres of water. Most treks lend boots and a jacket; Sicilying rents trekking shoes at the meeting point for €6. More on the cold side of the mountain in Etna from Taormina or Catania.
Yes: Etna Blaze runs two, with pickup from Catania around 7:30 in the morning, and Sicilying's trek has pickup as an option. The 3,000 m trek is from $100 with €54 for the cable car on site and includes a drone video; the summit crater trek is from $111 with €82 for the cable car and 4x4 on site.
