How the Etna Sunset Tour Works
Four steps, from the pickup in Catania to the viewpoint over the Valle del Bove and the drive back.
Pickup in Catania
Etna Est collects you from your accommodation in Catania, with 11 pickup options listed, in an air-conditioned minivan. Starting times depend on whether you book the morning or the sunset option; the listing says to check availability for them.
Up to 2,000 m and a Light Trek
Your guide talks about the volcano's lava flows, landscape and plants on the drive up. At about 2,000 m you take an easy guided walk around ancient craters and recent lava flows, which the operator says suits families with younger children and older relatives.
Tasting and the Lava Cave
You try Sicilian cantucci biscuits with zibibbo wine, then visit a lava flow cave with a helmet and flashlight provided. The listing caps the tour at 2,100 m: the summit and the Etna cable car are not included.
Valle del Bove, Then Back to Catania
The last stop is a viewpoint at Monte Pomiciaro over the Valle del Bove. On the sunset option you are there in the golden hour, then drive back to Catania after six hours in all. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Choosing a Sunset Tour
Which Etna Sunset Tour Is Yours?
How high the sunset tours go, what they really cost, the seven tours compared, what to bring, and what happens when the weather turns.
A Mount Etna sunset tour is an afternoon trip to the slopes, not to the summit. Six of the seven tours here drive you to about 2,000 m on the southern and eastern slopes and walk you round old craters and lava flows; most add a lava cave and a tasting, with the evening light at the end. Our pick is Etna Est’s tour from Catania, from $66 and rated 4.8 from 4,437 reviews, the most reviewed tour in this section. It is sold as a morning or a sunset tour: you choose the sunset option when you book. The one tour that goes higher leaves Taormina by coach and switches to 4x4s for the upper slopes.

How high a sunset tour goes
Most sunset tours stop at about 2,000 m, around Rifugio Sapienza and the Silvestri craters, where no guide is required. Etna Est’s listing says its tour goes to a maximum of 2,100 m, and Exclusive Etna Excursion gives the same ceiling. Kemedia’s two tours name Rifugio Sapienza at 1,910 m. That keeps them below 2,500 m, the height above which an authorised alpine or volcanological guide is required by the mayoral ordinances.
SAT Group’s trip from Taormina is the exception. Its coach climbs to about 1,800 m, where you switch to jeeps to reach about 2,800 m, which the operator calls “the highest authorized point”, escorted by licensed guides of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). How high you go is decided on the day by the comuni’s ordinances on INGV’s advice, and tours list an alternative route when the summit is shut. If you want the summit craters themselves, see the Etna summit tours or the cable car and 4x4 tours.
When the sun sets
The tours do not give one fixed time, because sunset moves through the year. In Catania the sun sets at about 20:24 at the June solstice, about 18:15 on 21 October and about 16:45 in late November and December. Etnaround’s listing says its departure time may be moved earlier depending on the month, and the others ask you to check availability for start times. No tour can promise a clear sky: cloud on the mountain can hide the sunset even on a dry day in Catania.
The real price
On this page the listed price is close to the full price. None of the sunset tours from Catania lists a cable car or a 4x4 fee to pay on site, because none of them uses one. Etna Est’s $66 per person covers the pickup, the guide, the cave kit and the tasting; it excludes lunch and water, so bring your own. On SAT Group’s Taormina trip the 4x4 is included, but food and drinks are not, dinner at a restaurant at 1,800 m is optional and at your own cost, and wind jackets and boots can be rented on site for an extra charge the listing does not state.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; cash fees as the listings state them. Operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The four Catania van tours. Etna Est, Exclusive Etna Excursion, Kemedia and Etna Vibes run close to the same day: a tasting of local products, a lava cave with helmets and torches, and a walk on old craters at about 2,000 m. Exclusive Etna Excursion and Etna Vibes both name the Grotta dei Tre Livelli cave, and Etna Vibes ends with 30 minutes at the Silvestri craters for the sunset. Exclusive Etna Excursion, Kemedia and Etna Vibes cap groups at 8; Etna Est offers private or small-group versions.
A glass of wine at sunset. Etnaround’s tour includes a windproof jacket, a glass of Etna wine and light food at sunset at Piano Vetore. It does not include hotel pickup, and it needs two people to run, so solo travellers are asked to contact the operator before booking. A guest from France wrote of “the charcuterie roll, cheese and wine at the end of the day”. For a day among the vineyards instead, see the Etna wine tours.
From Taormina. Kemedia’s tour picks up in Taormina and Giardini Naxos and follows the same pattern as its Catania tour, in a group of up to 8. SAT Group’s 8-hour trip is the one for the upper slopes. For which base suits you, read Etna from Taormina or Catania.

See this tour →What to bring, and who it suits
Dress for the mountain, not for Catania. It is roughly 12 to 13 °C colder at Rifugio Sapienza than in the city, and colder again after the sun goes down. Etna Est asks for a windbreaker, gloves, hiking shoes, water, snacks and weather-appropriate clothes, and does not allow sandals, flip-flops or high heels. Kemedia lends trekking shoes if you ask in the booking notes or by the day before.
The van tours suit families and anyone who wants an easy walk. They are not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and Etna Est also lists pregnant women, wheelchair users and people with heart problems or high blood pressure. Etnaround does not take children under 6. SAT Group’s 4x4 trip is not recommended for pregnant women, newborn babies or people with back or heart problems. If you want a longer walk, look at the guided hikes below 2,500 m or the jeep and lava cave tours.
When the weather turns
The guide makes the call on the day. Exclusive Etna Excursion says that in bad weather the guide can change the itinerary for safety, and Etnaround says weather can alter its route. Every tour in this section offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can wait for the forecast before you commit. If you plan to walk the lower craters on your own instead, read can you hike Etna without a guide first.

"> Thank you so much, Elia, for the incredible experience on Mount Etna! Knowledgeable, passionate, and super attentive to ensuring we experienced the mountain safely. An unforgettable day. Highly recommended! — Olivia, Sabina, Sergio, Alberto 🤗🔝🔝🔝🔝"
"I really enjoyed it. Danilo is an excellent guide with great knowledge and the ability to present information in an interesting and accessible way (we were with children). The route itself is interesting and a bit challenging at the beginning! Thank you very much!!!!"
"The trip was what was expected, our guide Luca, was polite, knowledgeable and extremely helpful."
"Everything was great! 😊 In terms of difficulty level, the tour is more suitable for people who don't hike regularly, for older people, or for families with children. The level of exertion really is minimal. Important to know: Be sure to bring warm and long clothing! Long trousers and, above all, a warm sweater are recommended, because it gets really very cold at the top. 🥶 In my opinion, you should even bring a jacket in addition to the sweater; I am somewhat sensitive to the cold. The sunset is truly breathtaking. There are 4 stops in total: 1. Viewpoint with history 2. Volcano cave 3. Up to the volcano 4. Sunset view"
"We really enjoyed our trip. A really fun and interesting day and Luca was a fantastic guide. Thank you!"
"Our guide, Daphne, was exceptional in every way: knowledgeable, warm, friendly, aware of each member of the group. Absolutely made the trip perfect. Also, David, our driver, was great! Pick up and drop off went well and was super easy, and the visit to etna was amazing. The lighter hikes fine with sturdy sneakers but I’ll be back with my hiking boots to do a more ambitious hike. This is a MUST DO activity if you are traveling in Sicily!!"
"It was a very well-rounded tour with various interesting stops!"
