How the Etna Wine Tour Works

Four steps, from the hotel pickup in Taormina to the tasting table at the winery and the drive back.

  1. Pickup at Your Taormina Hotel

bdm collects you from one of 10 pickup points in and around Taormina, including Taormina Mare and the Recanati bus terminal in Naxos, in an air-conditioned car or minivan. The group is limited to 8 people.

  2. Up the Volcano, With or Without the Walk

You drive to a tourist resort at about 1,800 to 2,000 m, with shops, bars and restaurants. The guide's walk of about an hour and a half through lava flows and extinct lateral craters is optional; you can have a coffee instead.

  3. Into a Lava Tunnel

The walk includes a lava tunnel visit of about 15 minutes. In winter the guide leads an easy snowshoe walk instead; the listing says the snowshoe rental is not included and is paid on the spot, 15 euros per person.

  4. Wine and Food at the Winery

You transfer to a winery on Etna to taste its red and white wines paired with typical ingredients and recipes, with a sommelier, before the drive back to your hotel after about 7 hours. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Choosing a Wine Tour

Which Etna Wine Tour Is Yours?

What an Etna wine tour is, what it really costs, the seven tours compared, who each suits, and what happens when the weather turns.

An Etna wine tour takes you to a winery on the volcano’s slopes for a tasting, and the better ones add a walk on old lava or a lunch among the vines. Most of the seven tours here start in Taormina; others leave from Catania or Siracusa. Our pick is bdm’s 7-hour tour from Taormina, from $170 and rated 4.9 from 386 reviews. It adds an optional walk on lava flows and a lava tunnel to a food and wine pairing at the winery, with hotel pickup, in a group of up to 8. If you only want the tasting, a half-day tour from Taormina starts at $67.

What an Etna wine tour is, and how high it goes

Etna has its own wine appellation. The Etna DOC was established in 1968, the first DOC in Sicily. Etna Rosso is made from at least 80% Nerello Mascalese, with Nerello Cappuccio allowed up to 20%, and Etna Bianco from at least 60% Carricante; Etna Bianco Superiore needs at least 80% Carricante. That is what you taste on these tours, though the listings do not name the wineries or the wines, and the cellar can change from day to day.

In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, wine tours account for 7% of the reviews of Etna products, and minivan tours with a tasting for another 11%. Two shapes are sold. A tasting-only tour drives you to a winery and back: Noema Viaggi’s half-day trip goes to a winery at Linguaglossa, on the north side. A volcano-and-wine day adds the slopes first. bdm reaches a resort at about 1,800 to 2,000 m, and the Catania tour from Etna Experience Excursion reaches a maximum of 2,000 m. All of them stay below 2,500 m, where walking is free; above it an authorised guide is required by the mayoral ordinances. For the craters higher up, see the Etna summit tours.

The real price

Wine tours are the simplest to price on Etna: none of them lists a cable car or 4x4 fee to pay on the day, because none uses one. bdm’s $170 per person covers the hotel pickup, the guide, bottled water, the walk, the lava tunnel and the food and wine tasting. The one cash item is seasonal: in winter the snowshoe rental is paid on the spot, 15 euros per person, if you join the snowshoe walk.

The spread in price is about what is included. Noema Viaggi’s $67 buys four wines and an appetizer, but the listing excludes transport from your hotel to the pickup point. Sicily Activities’ $201 adds hotel pickup, five glasses, a lunch with organic Etna products and dessert. Lunch is also included on both Alcantara days.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; cash fees as the listings state them. Operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.

The Taormina tasting tours. Noema Viaggi drives through Fiumefreddo di Sicilia and Piedimonte Etneo to the winery at Linguaglossa for four wines with cheeses, preserved vegetables and local olive oil. Sicily Activities visits a family-run winery’s cellars, then serves lunch on a farmhouse terrace above the vineyards, finishing with homemade limoncello. A guest from Norway on Noema’s tour wrote that “we had plenty of time to explore the vineyard”.

The Alcantara days. Etna People from Taormina and Etna Experience Excursion from Catania both pair a walk around extinct craters at about 2,000 m and a lava cave with a winery lunch, then the Alcantara gorges. Etna Experience Excursion includes the gorge entrance tickets and lends trekking shoes and a jacket; Etna People includes hiking boots, a jacket and a walking stick, or snowshoes in winter.

From Catania and Siracusa. Lemontour spends about 2 hours on Etna with a lava cave, then 2 hours tasting at Zafferana Etnea. My Siracusa adds trekking poles and a guided walk on the southern slopes before a winery tasting; one guest from the United Kingdom reported in October 2026 that a local business charged extra to walk round a crater. For an evening glass of wine on the mountain, see the Etna sunset tours.

Who it suits, and what to bring

The tasting-only tours suit anyone who wants Etna’s wine without the mountain. Noema Viaggi and bdm list only babies under 1 or people over 95 as not suitable, and bdm’s listing marks its tour wheelchair accessible, with every activity optional; ask the operator about the walk before you book. The tours with a crater walk are not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and Etna Experience Excursion adds wheelchair users and people with heart problems. Tell the operator about food allergies: bdm asks, and Sicily Activities and Etna Experience Excursion offer vegetarian and other diets on request.

On the volcano days, dress for the slopes. It is roughly 12 to 13 °C colder at Rifugio Sapienza than in Catania. bdm asks for hiking shoes, a jacket, rain gear and long trousers. If you would rather go further on foot, see the guided hikes below 2,500 m or the jeep and lava cave tours, and for where to stay, Etna from Taormina or Catania.

When the weather turns

Etna Experience Excursion serves its winery lunch outdoors or indoors depending on the weather. The walk is the part that changes with the season: in winter bdm offers an easy snowshoe walk, and Etna People lists snowshoes in place of the walking stick. Every tour in this section offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can wait for the forecast before you commit.

"Juliano was very helpful and the trip went very smoothly thanks to his efforts. We had an amazing day enjoying Etna from different vantage points and understanding lava flow.and the Mountain."

Sharon Canada

"Very nice trip to Etna and a nice winetasting with good food."

Stina Sweden

"My mom, sister, and I had THE most wonderful time adventuring with Mauritzio and the group! His love for Etna, his hometown, the history and geology shone through and I even found myself taking little notes on my phone! He led us on a journey up through a former lava flow and into a more remote area to find lava fissures and caves where we truly felt we were on a different planet! The walk was uphill (understandably— you’re on Etna !) and could be slippery in some parts (it was a misty day) so Mauritzio had inspected us all before we began and saw my mom needed better sneakers to do the hike; he quickly then rented her much stronger hiking boots that saved her feet! He truly went above and beyond at every step of the way, even sharing sweet surprises from his hometown on our journey back. The wine tasting and tour was equally amazing - so much so that my sister is looking into shipping the bubbly we tasted to serve at her wedding. Cannot speak more highly of Mauritzio and this tour!"

Caitlin United States

"We had an absolutely wonderful time on this Mount Etna and wine-tasting tour. Our guide Maurizio was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and entertaining, making the whole experience both enjoyable and interesting. We learned so much while having a great time. The wine tasting was generous, with plenty of delicious wine to enjoy, and the food was absolutely delicious! Everything was well organized, and the atmosphere made the experience even more special. We couldn’t have asked for a better day and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Sicily. Thank you for such a fantastic experience."

Teresia Switzerland

"Brilliant trip. The information and hike was just enough. Wine tasting, food and tour was brilliant! We had so much fun"

Karen United Kingdom

"Salvatore was a great guide, extremely knowledgable about Etna and other local history. We were a group of 4 and would highly recommend this activity."

Amanda United Kingdom

"This was a great day out and our guide Giuliano was excellent - both enthusiastic and knowledgable. The walk across the lava fields of previous eruptions was fascinating and we learned a lot about volcanoes and how Etna has shaped the landscape and communities, and influenced the crops grown, including vines. The visit to an Etna vineyard was enjoyable, the wines were excellent and the food pretty good. Overall this was one of the best guided tours we’ve experienced."
