Etna Tours From Taormina or Catania
Etna tours from Taormina or from Catania: which tours pick up where, how long the drive up takes in the listings, and what adding Taormina does to the price.
Book from wherever you sleep, but know the trade: from Catania the drives up are shorter and the tours cheaper, while from Taormina you pay for the longer ride, and of the high-altitude tours we track, only one leaves from there.
In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, an Etna volcano tour that adds Taormina costs about 60% more than one that does not. In the same operator’s like-for-like tours, the gap is about $22 a head.
How long the drive up takes
The listings give their own transfer times, and they are the best guide to your day:
- From Catania: 40 minutes (Etna Touring’s car to the cable car), 50 minutes to an hour for most jeep, sunset and wine tours, up to 1.5 hours on Kemedia’s shuttle routes.
- From Taormina: about an hour (bdm’s car), 75 minutes (Noema’s coach to Linguaglossa), 1.5 hours (Kemedia’s vans).
- From Siracusa: 85 minutes in My Siracusa’s vehicle.
Add the same again for the way back. A “5-hour” tour from Taormina can fill most of a day, and Etna Touring notes that its Catania pickup starts at 7:30 AM for an excursion that begins on the mountain at 9:30 AM.
Like for like: the price of adding Taormina
The cleanest comparison is one operator running the same tour from both towns.
| Tour | From Catania | From Taormina |
|---|---|---|
| Kemedia: trek, lava cave and tasting, 7 hours | $65, 4.8 (703) | $88, 4.7 (779) |
| Kemedia: sunset, cave and tasting, 5 hours | $66, 4.8 (1,817) | $88, 4.7 (486) |
| Guided trek with lava cave | Etnaround, $84, 7 hours, 4.9 (1,829) | Etna People, $110, 6.5 hours, light lunch, 4.9 (549) |
| Wine day with Alcantara | Etna Experience, $107, 8 hours, 4.8 (551) | Etna People, $152, 8.5 hours, 4.8 (523) |

All four Kemedia tours cap groups at 8; the Taormina ones add pickup in Taormina or Giardini Naxos. Neither Kemedia tour includes the cable car or the 4x4 to the highest reachable altitude; the Taormina listing says that option can be bought on the spot.
Which tours start where
From Catania you can reach every way up. Summit tours with pickup include Etna Blaze’s 3,400 m trek ($111, plus €82 for cable car and 4x4 on site) and its 3,000 m trek with a drone video ($100, plus €54 cable car). Etna Touring runs 3,000 m ($88) and 3,340 m ($99) cable car days from the city centre; both leave the cable car and jeep ticket to be paid on site. The jeep tours, the sunset tours and most of the hikes also start in Catania, many from fixed meeting points rather than hotels. If you want the door-to-door version, Etna Est’s morning or sunset tour includes hotel pickup, with 11 pickup options, for $66, and Kemedia’s Catania tours collect from your accommodation or nearby.
From Taormina the tours we track are hikes, sunsets and wine days, plus one upper-craters evening: SAT Group’s sunset tour, $135 for 8 hours from the Interbus terminal, with coach and 4x4 jeep included. The wine days are mostly from Taormina: bdm ($170, hotel pickup), Sicily Activities ($201, pickup at your accommodation) and Noema’s half day ($67, from pickup points, not hotels). See Etna wine tours.
From both: etnalivetour’s 4x4 day, from $129, 8 hours with a lava cave; lunch and the Alcantara Gorges come with the full-day option, so check which option the from-price buys; pickup away from the meeting point as an option.
On the mountain: many summit and cable-car tours have no pickup at all and meet at the operator’s office or a meeting point on the mountain. That includes the Etna Guides 3,000 m trek, Aitne Med’s and Ashàra’s summit treks, and Sicilying’s summit hike, where pickup is an option at checkout. With a hire car, these work from either town.
So which should you book?
- Staying in Catania, want the summit: book a summit tour with Catania pickup, or drive to a meeting point. See Etna summit tours.
- Staying in Taormina, want the summit, no car: the choice is narrow. SAT Group’s sunset tour goes to the upper craters with transport included; otherwise you need a transfer to a meeting point. Compare the cable car tours.
- Staying in Taormina, want an easy day: a hike-and-cave tour or a wine day with hotel pickup is the simplest plan.
- Staying in Siracusa: My Siracusa’s trek, wine and food tour is $107 for 7.5 hours with pickup.
Pickup is convenience you pay for, not a better Etna. The same craters, caves and lava flows are on the itinerary either way.
Reading a pickup listing
Three details in the listings decide how your day runs, and they are easy to miss:
- Hotel or meeting point. “Pickup” can mean your door or a fixed spot. Noema’s wine tour excludes “any transportation from your hotel to the pick up point”; Etnaround’s tours collect from central Catania and Trecastagni, not hotels; Etna Est and Sicily Activities come to your accommodation.
- Where the clock starts. Etna Touring says the duration of its Catania tour “refers only to the excursion”, with pickup two hours before the start on the mountain. Count the transfer in both directions.
- What is still to pay. Pickup does not change the on-site ticket. Etna Blaze’s Catania treks include the transfer and the gear, and still leave the cable car (€54) or the cable car and 4x4 (€82) to be paid on site.
If the listing is unclear on any of these, message the operator before you book.
Before you decide
The town you leave from often decides the side of the volcano you see; read Etna north or south side. For every way up with its cash fees, see how much an Etna tour costs.
